Let me share my personal experience with linen shrinkage while washing
Of course, linen shrinks when it is washed. Linen can shrink up to 3-4% and if it is not pre-washed it can even shrink up to 10%. In a dryer, it can shrink up to 4-5%. Avoid too hot, too cool water. Take Lukewarm water, and mild detergent, and the gentle cycle is suggested. These are three things to prevent shrinkage.
Linen is the best and oldest fabric. We all love to use it since it is a natural fabric. I too a linen lover. I'm using it since I am born. Once my girlfriend has gifted me a navy blue sheet set. So, as much I loved her as much I loved that. I cared about that sheet set too much. Does linen shrink when washed? Does linen get fade after wash? How to care for linen? So many questions were there to know. For that reason, I have studied about linen. Now I'm working in the field of luxury bedding accessories. Does linen shrink when washed?
Yes, linen shrinks but when we wash it with warm water. Neither wash linen in cold water not in hot water. Linen is to be wash in lukewarm temperature water. 35-40°C water is nice to wash Linen. While washing linen in a machine, use mild detergent, set a gentle cycle. In a dryer, it can shrink up to 4-5%.
Does linen shrink or can we prevent linen from shrinkage? There are a few things, if we care about them we can prevent linen from shrinkage. Like, the instructions, given by the manufacturer. They better know about the cloths. As they have good ideas about Thread Count, Mixing of threads, Purity of cloth, they can give the best out of best suggestions. If there is a label or a booklet of instructions. You should follow them.
If there are no suggestions given by the manufacturer you can follow the following suggestions as per my experience I'll tell you;
- Do not use too hot water to wash linen clothes, whether it is sheets or bedding accessories or it is wearing clothes like shirts or t-shirts.
- Lukewarm water is best suggested.
- Water should not be hotter than 40 ℃.
- Use mild detergent.
- If you are using a machine to wash linen use enough water.
- Don't throw too many clothes together. Let linen clothes should move freely into the machine.
- Do not put dark-colored clothes with light-colored clothes.
DRYING PROCEDURE.
Does linen shrink in the dryer? Linen has a tendency to shrink, as it is a natural fabric. The hot dryer is restricted for drying linen unless you want linen to shrink. It is ok to dry linen clothes in the dryer at low temperature. Hanging linen is also not allowed because it loses its original shape when wet linen hangs. Dry it on a flat surface.
